Last night Dash, Kathryn and Brent's Jack Russell, was hit by a truck. Brent picked him up in his arms, yelping in pain, so Mutti tried to comfort him. As any dog in distress will do, Dash bit her on the hand. She tried to pry his mouth open with her free hand so he chomped down on that one, too. Brent rushed him crying and bleeding, to the emergency pet clinic (the only option at that time of night), while Kathryn rushed Mutti, also crying and bleeding, to the emergency people clinic.
Dash was immediately taken in for x-rays and surgery to repair his bowel and bladder, and they hope his hip and leg will be able to mend on their own over time. At this point they are not positive he will survive, but they are hopeful. He will remain hospitalized for the next 3-5 days, then kenneled at home for another 6-8 weeks. At that time they will decide if his hip will need surgery.
Mutti had a shot of antibiotics at the clinic, and remains on pills to prevent infection. Her hands still hurt like crazy, one finger is numb. We are quite sure she will survive.
Additional dog news---Rusty had his teeth cleaned, so we also had his lumps removed from his back. He currently is sporting 3 bald spots with big stitched up holes. He will definitely survive, but may never forgive me.
